Winter Scenes

This is the white season. It is harsh; the trees are bare, the soil is fallow, the wind blasts from the North. Soon the waters are iced and the countryside is whitened, first by deep and sparkling frosts and then by heavy snows. Log fires burn in the grates and footprints plod in the snow but, hard though this season is, it is one that can reveal nature and the village in surprising scenes of beauty.
